Engagement Ring Cost Guide UK

Real prices, honest advice, and practical budget tips from Hatton Garden jewellers. No sales pressure — just the information you need to make a confident decision.

The average UK engagement ring costs £1,500 – £3,000. But averages are misleading — a beautiful ring can cost £900 with a lab-grown diamond, or £50,000+ with a rare natural stone. What matters is understanding what drives the price.

What Determines the Cost?

An engagement ring price has two components: the setting (the metal band and design) and the diamond (the centre stone). At MOH London, you choose each separately through our ring builder — this transparency means you always know exactly where your money is going.

Setting Cost

£900 – £5,000

Determined by metal (18ct gold vs platinum), design complexity (solitaire vs halo vs pave), and accent diamonds.

Diamond Cost

£200 – £100,000+

Determined by the 4Cs (carat, cut, colour, clarity), natural vs lab-grown, and certification lab.

What You Get at Each Price Point

Lab-Grown Diamond Savings

Lab-grown diamonds are physically, chemically, and optically identical to natural diamonds — but cost 60-80% less. This is the single biggest lever for getting more ring for your money.

The Salary Rule — Debunked

The idea that you should spend two or three months' salary on an engagement ring was invented by De Beers in a 1930s advertising campaign. It was marketing, not financial advice. There is no “correct” amount to spend.

What actually matters: choose a ring that reflects your partner's style, fits comfortably within your finances, and is designed and crafted with care. A £1,000 ring chosen with thought and love will always be more meaningful than a £10,000 ring chosen by formula.

Expert Tips to Maximise Your Budget

Choose H colour instead of D

Looks identical when set in a ring — saves 20-30%

Choose SI1 clarity instead of VS1

Eye-clean in round and princess cuts — saves 15-20%

Consider 0.90ct instead of 1.00ct

Visually identical but below the "magic size" price jump — saves 15-20%

Choose a halo setting

A 0.70ct centre in a halo looks like a 1.20ct solitaire

Consider an oval or pear shape

Appears 10-15% larger than round at the same carat weight — and costs less per carat

Explore lab-grown diamonds

Same stone, same sparkle, same certification — 60-80% less

Buy the setting and diamond separately

Our ring builder gives you full control and transparency over each component

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the average engagement ring cost in the UK?

The average engagement ring in the UK costs between £1,500 and £3,000, according to industry surveys. However, this figure varies enormously — we see rings from £500 to well over £50,000. The "average" is less useful than understanding what you get at each price point. At MOH London, our most popular price range is £1,500-£3,500, which delivers excellent quality in both natural and lab-grown diamonds.

Should I spend 3 months' salary on an engagement ring?

No — the "three months' salary" rule was invented by De Beers in a 1930s marketing campaign. It has no practical basis. Spend what you are comfortable with. A well-chosen £1,000 ring can be just as beautiful and meaningful as a £10,000 ring. The quality of the design, the cut of the diamond, and the thought behind the choice matter far more than the price tag.

How much cheaper are lab-grown diamond engagement rings?

Lab-grown diamonds are typically 60-80% less expensive than natural diamonds of equivalent quality. A 1-carat G/VS2 natural diamond costs approximately £3,000-£6,000, while a lab-grown equivalent costs £800-£1,500. This means you can either save significantly or get a much larger, higher-quality stone for the same budget. Around 40% of our engagement ring clients at MOH London now choose lab-grown.

What is the cheapest engagement ring that still looks good?

A beautifully designed lab-grown diamond solitaire in 18ct gold starts from approximately £900 at MOH London. This gets you a 0.50ct+ centre stone with excellent cut in a clean, classic setting that is indistinguishable from rings costing five times more. The key is prioritising cut quality (which determines sparkle) over carat weight.

How much does a 1-carat diamond engagement ring cost in the UK?

A 1-carat natural diamond engagement ring typically costs £4,000-£8,000 (setting + stone), depending on colour, clarity, and cut grade. With a lab-grown 1-carat diamond, the total cost drops to approximately £1,500-£3,000. The setting itself (without the diamond) ranges from £900 to £2,500 depending on the design and metal.

Is platinum worth the extra cost?

Platinum costs approximately £100-£300 more per ring than 18ct white gold. The advantages: platinum is denser, more durable, hypoallergenic, and develops a distinguished patina over time. White gold requires rhodium re-plating every 1-2 years to maintain its bright white colour, which is an ongoing cost. For daily-wear rings like engagement rings, platinum is often the better long-term investment.

Can I design an engagement ring on a budget?

Absolutely. Our ring builder lets you start with a setting design and then choose a diamond that fits your budget. Tips for maximising value: choose H colour instead of D (looks identical when set), choose SI1 clarity instead of VS1 (eye-clean at a lower price), consider 0.90ct instead of 1.00ct (visually identical, 15-20% cheaper), and explore lab-grown diamonds for the best size-to-price ratio.
