LAB GROWN DIAMONDS SCIENCE

Lab-grown diamonds, also referred to as lab-created diamonds, engineered diamonds, cultured diamonds, and man-made diamonds, are diamonds grown in controlled laboratory environments using advanced technological processes that replicate the conditions in which diamonds form naturally beneath the Earth's crust. These man-made diamonds consist of actual carbon atoms arranged in the same crystal structure as natural diamonds, and as a result, they exhibit similar optical and chemical properties.

To grow lab diamonds, tiny carbon seeds from pre-existing diamonds are used. The technology used to grow these diamonds replicates the natural method of diamond formation through either extreme pressure and heat or a specialised deposition process. Lab-grown fancy-coloured diamonds are formed in the presence of specific trace elements during the growth phase, much like natural diamonds. The composition of trace elements may differ from natural diamonds in both white and fancy coloured lab diamonds. Only specialised equipment can detect the slight differences in trace elements and crystal growth that distinguish lab diamonds from natural diamonds.

The science of creating gem-quality lab-created diamonds has been perfected in the last decade with modern technological advances, despite over a century of diamond-growing experimentation. These lab-created diamonds are conflict-free and superior in every way to earth-mined diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds are available in colourless ranges, and cultured diamonds are also available in fancy colours that are considered rare in nature, including popular hues of vivid fancy yellow. Fancy coloured lab-created diamonds are priced comparatively reasonably when compared to their natural-coloured diamond counterparts

LAB-DIAMONDS ARE SO REAL

Lab diamonds are indeed 100% real diamonds, possessing optical, chemical, and physical properties identical to those of naturally mined diamonds. In recent years, the demand for lab-grown diamonds has skyrocketed due to advancements in engineering techniques and technology that enable the production of beautiful, affordable, and genuine diamonds.

Our team of diamond experts provides a comprehensive guide to the growth of lab-created diamonds, highlighting their similarities and differences with natural diamonds and diamond alternatives. We also delve into the complexities of grading, certification, and the cost of man-made diamonds. Armed with this knowledge, you can make an informed decision on whether a lab-grown diamond ring is the right choice for you.

LAB DIAMONDS VS REAL DIAMONDS

Lab-grown diamonds are authentic diamonds that are visually, chemically, and physically identical to natural diamonds. These man-made gems cannot be distinguished from natural diamonds even under extreme magnification, and will be identified as genuine diamonds when subjected to standard diamond-testing methods. While specialised laboratory equipment can detect if a diamond was grown in a lab, even the most skilled gemologists cannot differentiate between natural and lab-grown diamonds with the naked eye. CREATION OF LAB GROWN DIAMONDS

To comprehend the creation of synthetic diamonds, it is essential to first understand the natural process of diamond formation. The formation of natural diamonds is a remarkable phenomenon of nature that intrigues many. Diamonds are formed deep within the Earth's mantle, between 90 and 150 miles below the surface. Pure carbon particles undergo crystallisation as a result of the intense heat and pressure, which gradually builds up over time. Volcanic eruptions transport the diamonds from the mantle to the Earth's surface.

In essence, laboratories replicate the conditions of the Earth's mantle to create diamonds. There are two methods for producing synthetic diamonds: HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) and CVD (chemical vapour deposition). Explore more about CVD and HPHT process.

THE HPHT PROCESS

The HPHT method for diamond synthesis was first developed in the 1950s.

To initiate the process, a capsule containing a carbon starting material, a metal flux mixture, and a small diamond seed is placed into a press. Typically, graphite, a common mineral composed of pure carbon, is used as the carbon starting material.

The capsule is then heated to temperatures ranging from 1,300º to 1,600º C and subjected to pressures up to 59,200 atm. This results in the dissolution of the carbon source into the metal flux. The composition of the metal flux may vary, but usually includes a blend of iron, nickel, and cobalt, which helps reduce the temperature required for diamond formation. The dissolved carbon source can then permeate through the molten metal mixture and crystallise around the diamond seed, eventually resulting in a lab-grown diamond.

The duration of the HPHT process can range from a few hours to several weeks, depending on the size and quality of the desired diamonds.

The HPHT diamond synthesis process employs three primary types of presses: belt, cubic, and split-sphere (also known as BARS).

The belt press was the first type of press utilised in lab-grown diamond production and is still in use today, albeit with various improvements and modifications. The belt press applies pressure to the capsule from above and below using two anvils.

The cubic press, which emerged as a result of the belt press, functions in the same way as the belt press but employs six anvils instead of two to handle larger, cubic materials. While a cubic press can apply greater pressure than a belt press, it is not as scalable as a belt press, resulting in less frequent use.

The split-sphere press, on the other hand, employs eight outer anvils and six smaller inner anvils to maximize pressure on the capsule. The cylindrical capsule is then placed into an oil-filled barrel, which accelerates heat transfer, enabling higher temperatures to be achieved at a much quicker rate.

THE CVD PROCESS

The Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) is a more modern diamond-growing method that begins with a thin diamond seed slice. This process involves using ultra-pure carbon gases in a controlled chamber, which are ionised with lasers or microwaves to bond molecularly with the seed. The CVD process can be achieved through several techniques, including Low-pressure CVD (LPCVD), Ultrahigh vacuum CVD (UHVCVD), Microwave Plasma Vapor Deposition (MPCVD), and Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD).

Lab diamonds created through the HPHT process are typically of superior quality compared to those created through the CVD process. The CVD process is known to be very rapid, which can result in internal imperfections like spots and graining. Additionally, CVD diamonds often exhibit a brownish undertone, and post-growth treatment can sometimes leave them with a milky or hazy appearance, unlike the top-quality HPHT diamonds that are produced with exceptional gem-grade quality. In contrast, HPHT diamonds are typically of such high quality that they rarely require additional post-growth treatment.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

LAB GROWN DIAMONDS

What are lab diamonds, and are they real diamonds?

Yes! Lab grown diamonds are 100% real diamonds. Lab-created diamonds are indistinguishable from natural, earth-mined diamonds in terms of their chemical, molecular, and visual properties. They are produced in a laboratory environment, utilizing the same processes of heat and pressure that occur naturally in the earth's crust to create mined diamonds. Therefore, lab-grown diamonds are authentic diamonds, identical to their natural counterparts in every way.

What are the other titles for lab grown diamonds called?

Diamonds created in a laboratory are known by various names, including man-made diamonds, artisan-created artificial diamonds, synthetic diamonds, or cultured diamonds. When you come across any of these terms, you can be sure they refer to lab-grown diamonds. It's crucial to distinguish lab-grown diamonds from other gemstones that may resemble them, like Moissanite. While Moissanite is also often artificially produced, it has a distinct chemical composition from that of a diamond and is considered a diamond simulant, not a genuine diamond. Therefore, it's important to clarify the difference between these two types of gemstones.

What are synthetic diamonds, are they the same as simulated diamonds?

Diamond simulants, such as cubic zirconia, are alternatives to diamonds that lack the chemical and visual characteristics of natural or lab-grown diamonds. They also fall short in terms of durability and brilliance.

Will lab-grown diamonds test as real diamonds?

Yes, a lab-grown diamond will register as a genuine diamond when tested since it has the same chemical, physical, and optical properties as natural diamonds. However, specialized equipment can differentiate between a lab-grown diamond and a naturally occurring diamond, and the diamond's certificate will specify its origin.

Do lab grown diamonds last as long as natural diamonds?

Certainly, a lab-grown diamond has the same longevity as a natural diamond. The composition of a lab-grown diamond is identical to that of a natural diamond, both of which score a 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, rendering them the toughest naturally occurring substances on earth. Therefore, they are highly resistant to scratching, abrasion, or breakage.

How long does it take to create lab grown diamonds?

The duration for creating a lab-grown diamond primarily depends on its carat weight and the manufacturing process employed. Typically, a 1-carat white diamond takes approximately two weeks to produce, whereas larger diamonds may require up to a month.

Do lab grown diamonds lose their clarity ever?

Both natural and lab-grown diamonds retain their sparkle and clarity over time. After a lab-grown diamond is created and cut, it is typically evaluated by professionals who assess its colour, cut, clarity and carat size. These characteristics will remain unchanged unless the diamond is significantly damaged. However, it's important to keep in mind that regular cleaning of lab-grown diamond jewellery is necessary since accumulated dirt can occasionally diminish their shine.

Where can I buy lab grown diamonds in the UK?

In the UK engagement ring market, the concept of lab-grown diamonds is still emerging, and there are limited retailers selling lab-grown diamond engagement rings and jewellery. At our store, we provide lab-grown diamonds as part of our bespoke engagement ring and jewellery services.

Once we have an understanding of your budget and preferences, our gemologists will curate a carefully chosen collection of top-quality lab-grown diamonds that fit your unique budget. We will then schedule a meeting with you to discuss your engagement ring or jewellery design.

Book an appointment online or in-store to meet with our diamond & design experts.

What is the emotional significance of a lab-grown diamond?

The decision ultimately rests with you. Certain individuals cherish the romantic history associated with naturally occurring diamonds, which took billions of years to form, and are regarded as rare, precious, and possibly the most exquisite and captivating creation of nature. On the other hand, some prioritize the ethical value of lab-grown diamonds and admire the remarkable feat of science in creating something that took the earth billions of years to achieve. It ultimately boils down to the contrast between the powerful influence of nature and the wonders of science.

Lab diamonds are as pure as natural diamonds?

Compared to lab-grown diamonds, finding natural diamonds with the same level of purity can be difficult. Only 2% of natural diamonds have the equivalent level of purity as lab-grown diamonds (Type-IIa) composition.

How to determine that a Lab-grown diamonds are conflict-free?

All lab-grown diamonds are considered conflict-free since they are created in controlled laboratory environments using advanced technology, without any involvement from mining in conflict zones. Conversely, natural diamonds need to be carefully vetted to ensure they are conflict-free before being considered ethically sourced.

How to choose the best lab created diamond for your engagement ring?

Selecting the finest lab-grown diamonds for your engagement ring is no different from selecting a natural diamond. If you've decided that a lab-grown diamond engagement ring is the way to go, adhere to these guidelines:

  1. Determine your total budget for the engagement ring.
  2. Select the ring style you prefer, customise the metal as per your choice and subtract the cost of the ring to determine how much you can devote to the diamond.
  3. Choose the shape of the lab diamond you want and select from our curated feed.

You can learn more about selecting the ideal diamond for your engagement ring, but the key characteristics to prioritize are excellent cut quality, followed by high colour grade. Consider diamonds graded with an Excellent cut (for round diamonds) or Excellent polish and symmetry (for other shapes), D to G colour, and VS2 to SI1 clarity. This ensures that the diamond appears bright, white, and exceptionally sparkling. When narrowing down the options for your lab-grown diamond engagement ring, it's crucial to consult with knowledgeable gemmological specialists who can help you comprehend the intricacies and features of each diamond, highlight any flaws, and find the best value diamonds for your unique budget. To receive tailored advice or a quote, please contact us or book an appointment.

Is lab grown diamonds lose their value over time?

Similar to natural diamonds, the market value of lab-grown diamonds may fluctuate over time. However, since lab-grown diamonds are a relatively new introduction to the market, there is more uncertainty regarding their future pricing compared to natural diamonds. Unlike mined diamonds, lab-grown diamonds have a transparent supply chain and undergo fewer exchanges. They can be easily replaced or modified as required.

How much cheaper is a lab grown diamond?

Lab diamonds are typically 40% to 70% cheaper than natural diamonds. This is because the process of creating a lab diamond is more efficient and cost effective than the process to mine a diamond.
